I'll be the first to admit that, for me, sci-fi can be a hit or miss genre. I'm more of an urban fantasy guy when it comes to bending my mind. The quality of the writing is good, it definitely draws you into the action but I have to admit that I felt a sense of disconnect with the characters. I wanted to know what was going to happen but I didn't really care what happened to the characters. One of the driving motivations for the main character also seemed a bit contrived. All in all, I felt like I had more questions than answers when it was all said in done, but that could very well have been the author's intent. To summarize, well crafted and intelligent story that leaves you wondering if the stranger you shared a drink at the bar with last night slipped you a roofie.

Ryan Whitwam's debut novel is a winner! Usually inclined to read only reality-oriented books, this high-tech, sci-fi thriller far exceeds my expectations. From start to finish, The Crooked City is a compelling read, as the complex plot is seamlessly revealed, and each character is brought to life in a detailed, well-written narrative. Themes of power, control, murder, love, and sex - perfectly balanced - are presented at a fast-pace in a futuristic setting, leaving me to ponder the real potential for such types of high-tech control of humans. - This writer is extremely talented and I look forward to his next novel. - Highly recommended!

This is a fantastic sci-fi novel, full of action and a beautifully complex story. The imagery painted throughout (especially of the crooked city itself) is amazing and incredibly dynamic. The Crooked City kept me captivated from beginning to end, and the ending of the novel didn't disappoint. A highly recommended read.
