About this ebook

In Hosseini's unforgettable debut novel, The Kite Runner,
twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to win the local kite-fighting
tournament and his loyal friend Hassan promises to help him. But neither
of the boys can foresee what will happen to Hassan that afternoon, an
event that is to shatter their lives. After the Russians invade and the
family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must
return to an Afghanistan under Taliban rule to find the one thing that
his new world cannot grant him: redemption.

In his second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini
begins his story with Mariam, who is only fifteen when she is sent to
Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows
between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties
between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a
desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can
move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the
most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

Such an immersive piece of artistic literary. I was hooked from the first word to the last- on both books. Such tragic insights into the harsh realities of one of the many war-torn countries of the world. A very gripping book which me and my partner couldn't put down- we read it together. A great view into another culture which is amazingly creative and colourful. This book really brought the characters to life and the vivid descriptions transported me to the story settings. Unfortunately, these are both real-life examples of the atrocities and effects of war on Afghans and how some of Afghanistan's own people are bringing suffering to their own. Listen to Ahmad Zahir (as mentioned in the book's cultural intro) to get a further musical feel of Afghanistan's culture. These books (particularly the second) nearly made us cry and directed us to Khaled Hosseini's Foundation- which I recommend every reader does. I pledge to make a donation to it as these books have opened my eyes to Afghanistan even if the western media are ignoring it. I advise others to follow suit, One can only wonder what Afghanistan and it's people must have been like before the wars - a gem no doubt.

This book is devastating. It's raw. It rips your soul and makes you so vulnerable. You experience emotions as though you have been going through it all. As if you you have lived it. Same goes for A Thousand Splendid Suns. These are literary masterpieces which ought to be read by everyone. I'd give it 10 stars out of 5 if I could.
