This is probably the best of the Holmes novels for a first time reader. It has enough supposed "supernaturalism" to make it interesting, but also it has enough Holmesian logic to balance the scales. Very short novel. Good plotline. This was one of the last Sherlock Holmes novels written (The other being "The Valley Of Fear"). This, along with many of the Holmes stories, has been made into many many film versions. The Hound of The Baskervilles also seems to showcase the anti-supernaturalism of the Sherlock Holmes character. To Holmes, everything has a natural logical explanation. When stories of a huge demonic hellhound pursuing people to their doom on the bleak English moors after dark surface, Holmes is unruffled and does his usual "detective" thing! Highly recommended!

As many times as Sherlock Holmes was adapted into other forms of media, The Hounds of the Baskervilles still remains one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most gripping and suspenseful works. He very well establishes the character of Holmes as he takes on one of the most challenging cases he has had.

After seven years I've reread this exciting tale of danger. Ever was I intrigued and completely absorbed as I walked boldly about the daylight with Watson while shrinking into the shadows of the night to remain hidden from unsuspecting eyes. A very good book it was and still is.
