First time reader of this genre. I enjoyed many aspects and moments in the book, but felt the use of names annoying, from Pug to other world creatures. I found myself wondering why i needed to know all the names of creatures that seemed to only take up a few lines then were gone. Over complicated plots only to dissolve into nothing having me then wonder why i spent so many pages trying to remember names and places for, what seemed, no reason other than to fill pages. I did enjoy the way several stories unfolded in parallel but many characters were basically the same. It was a good book to read while in lockdown.

For those who love Tolkien should appreciate that this first novel is the start of something epic. Although some parts can be long-winded, I think that Feist needed to describe his world in depth so that we look forward to the next novel. This is my opinion and I love fantasy.

Read this series multiple times and still have the hard copies, don't think I've ever enjoyed a book series as much in my life. Definitely pick this up if you like the fantasy genre and don't listen to the hyper critical sad sacks rating it any less than 4 stars.

Raymond E. Feist was born and raised in Southern California. He was educated at the University of California, San Diego, where he graduated with honours in Communication Arts. He is the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed Riftwar saga among other books.
