In this story, MacDonald again weaves deep truths into a fairytale about two girls who encounter a wise old woman and are forever changed. The Wise Woman is a tale about two girls, one a shepherdess and the other a princess, both unhappy, spoiled little brats. Under similar circumstances they both encounter a wise old woman who shows what they are like inside, but the choices of each girl lead to very different results. This is a delightful and refreshing tale that will delight and inspire. As MacDonald said, "I could tell you a great deal more concerning them all, but I have already told more than is good for those who read but with their foreheads, and enough for those whom it has made look a little solemn, and sigh as they close the book."
