When everyone reads minds, a secret is a dangerous thing to keep. Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can't read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can't be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves. When she accidentally controls Raf's mind and nearly kills him, Kira tries to hide her frightening new ability from her family and an increasingly suspicious Raf. But lies tangle around her, and she's dragged deep into a hidden underworld of mindjackers, where having to mind control everyone she loves is just the beginning of the deadly choices before her.

Open Minds is the first novel in the Mindjack Saga, a young adult science fiction series.

There's a reason this book is free. The premise is intriguing but poorly executed. The protagonist is whiny and unlikable. The author's writing style is boring and at times awkward. The world is hard to believe not because of the supernatural elements but because of the bizarre attempts of the author to blend the past with the future -- reading minds and learning Latin? Creating nonsensical slang that's difficult to understand in context like "mesh" to replace cool is annoying and often misleading. Boo.

A refreshing level of depth to the characters and plot. The pace was smooth, which well matched the growing sense of dread felt by the main character as she got deeper and deeper into trouble. The relief at the end of the story made for a great conclusion. Of course she isn't completely free from danger. I'm looking forward to the next book! :-)

As a story about mind readers and how they converse with each other, this book was a great diversion from vampires and werewolves. It is always fascinating to try to understand how the mind works and this book presents some very conceivable ideals. Scary, but who knows? I would recommend it
