About this ebook

A special fortieth anniversary edition of The Rats, the classic, bestselling horror novel that launched James Herbert's career.

With a foreword by Neil Gaiman, author of Norse Mythology.

It was only when the bones of the first devoured victims were discovered that the true nature and power of these swarming black creatures with their razor sharp teeth and the taste for human blood began to be realized by a panic-stricken city. For millions of years man and rats had been natural enemies. But now for the first time – suddenly, shockingly, horribly – the balance of power had shifted . . .

Continue the chilling series from the Master of Horror, with Lair and Domain.

This is an amazing book I've just started reading it but it is already really interesting. It's a bit grusome and I think how he introduces certain characters are really amazing and it gets you really into reading it. It's deffinetly one that I would recommend to those that like horror books or are into blood and gore. This book is the first book I've read by James Herbet and with it being only 99p I had to buy it to see what it is like. It turns out it is really good and I'm going to buy some more of James Herbet's books in future and the good thing is I can read it anywhere as long as I take my phone with me it's amazing. I would definetly suggest it to people who are into animals killing humans and other animals and being based in London is the best place to base this story as it makes it so much more of a page turner, I can hardly put my phone down now I'm having to charge it everyday just because I'm constantly reading this book. Anyway that's my opinion definetly read it though, hoping to get some more of his books whilst they're on offer for 99p. Best be off got my book to read Thank you Mark

I like many others discovered Herbert books in my teens. I'm re-reading my favs and I really enjoyed this book more this time than the first time I think. Many don't like this book saying its sexist and uncomfortable to read. The fact it disgusts is a job well done. Its not about the lil cute and furry fancy rat. Its gritty harsh and brilliant.

I genuinely see James Herbert's passing as a loss to literature. At worst his writing is better than 90% of horror/thrillers out there. The Rats was his first and while there is a fair argument his writing improved this book is an excellent introduction to an amazing series. Personally I am lucky enough to not just have read the trilogy (the rats, lair, domain) but also the graphic novel called The City illustrated by Ian Miller which takes the story to James' conclusion. Read everything he touched. A brilliant author who should have been with us longer.
