Hated it - once you've seen Roots (& if you really really really ..... want to get upset, read the book), then this is like pouring poison into an open wound. Well made, respect to Steve McQueen but too too depressing. Oops, I just reviewed the film - hopefully the book goes into the human relationships better, like Roots did. My abiding memory now of the film is Solomon hanging from the tree. Agony.

The reader is taken into the world of slavery in the southern states and gets an insight into the truly dreadful inhumane cruelty that these people were subjected to. Extremely moving. An enjoyable read. Now to watch the film. Lost a star because the style in which it written (comensurate with the period, 200 years ago) is slight laborious to the modern day reader. However this does not detract from the serious subject matter.

What were people thinking? Why would any civilized person think they could own another person? I'm glad I didn't live in that time, I would have hated not being able to do anything to stop it! Btw, for those saying they are asked for payment for this free book: install Google Play Books, u won't be asked to pay for any book labeled FREE.
