About this ebook

If you liked Dune, Atlantis Gene and Star Wars—you will love the book Battlefield Earth!

In the year A.D. 3000, Earth is a dystopian wasteland, plundered of its natural resources by alien conquerors known as Psychlos. Fewer than thirty-five thousand humans survive in a handful of communities scattered across the face of a post-apocalyptic Earth.

From the ashes of humanity rises a young hero, Jonnie Goodboy Tyler. Setting off on an initial quest to discover a hidden evil, Jonnie unlocks the mystery of humanity’s demise and unearths a crucial weakness in their oppressors. Spreading the seeds of revolt, Jonnie and a small band of survivors pit their quest for freedom in an all-out rebellion that erupts across the continents of Earth and the cosmic sprawl of the Psychlo empire.

For the fate of the Galaxy lies on the Battlefield of Earth.

I read this book for the first time as a teenager and several times since. It has a power to remove the reader completely from mundanity, placing them firmly in the observers seat of this vast and infinitely rich story. Where SF so often projects a ruined and dystopian futurescape, battlefield earth begins in this way but relies less on fantastical future tech and more on the universal power of democracy and the spirit of man to create its eventual utopia. A refreshingly uncynical and escapist adventure.

Despite the length I've read this 4 or 5 times. Don't let the god-awful movie adaptation or the writer's scientology affiliation throw you -- it's an amazing story. It reads like a trilogy in a single volume and is surprisingly well-paced with a touch of humor and a fun cast of characters. Maintains it's rhythm extremely well despite the length and is definitely hard to stop reading.

Along with Ender Wiggins and Kerbouchard, Johnny Goodboy Tyler is one of my favorite main characters ever... Please ignore the stupid movie that was made its unbeatable and a joke compared to this book... And don't let the scientology issue keep you from reading this great book..
