About this ebook

World War Terminus had left the Earth devastated. Through its ruins, bounty hunter Rick Deckard stalked, in search of the renegade replicants who were his prey. When he wasn't 'retiring' them with his laser weapon,
he dreamed of owning a live animal - the ultimate status symbol in a world all but bereft of animal life.

Then Rick got his chance: the assignment to kill six Nexus-6 targets, for a huge reward. But in Deckard's world things were never that simple, and his assignment quickly turned into a nightmare kaleidoscope of subterfuge and deceit - and the threat of death for the hunter rather than the hunted ...

I've enjoyed many of Philip K Dick's short stories and had looked forward to reading this; never having seen Blade Runner, I had no idea what to expect. The whole thing is confusing; I'm still unsure what to make of the tangled story line and I have no idea what point the author was trying to make. I wouldn't recommend this one, I'm afraid.

Fascinating to read such an early sci fi book. The idea of bounty hunters pursuing rogue androids is great and the Rick's hunt has some exciting moments. There is quite a lot of philosophy built into this story from the complex relationship Rick has with the androids to the Mercerism religion that the remaining humans practice to the relationship of society to "specials" (people mentally damaged by the radioactive dust in the atmosphere). Personally I found the amount of philosophy heavy going and confusing. If you're just looking for a fun adventure then this isn't it. If you're looking for some brain-bending though then this is great.

Well I downloaded the free sample and lo and behold, it ended immediately after the author's introduction. I won't give it one star as this doesn't reflect the book's quality.

About the author

Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was born in Chicago but lived in California for most of his life. He went to college at Berkeley for a year, ran a record store and had his own classical-music show on a local radio station. He published his first short story, BEYOND LIES THE WUB in 1952. Among his many fine novels are THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, TIME OUT OF JOINT, DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? and FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID.
