About this ebook

If there was a road, I could not make it out in the faint starlight. There was nothing but land ... I had never before looked up at the sky when there was not a familiar mountain ridge against it. But this ws the complete dome of heaven.

It isn't a bad story, and Ms Cather's experiences are similar enough to my ancestors' that I think I'm willing to grant her more leeway than not. But the narrative isn't dear to me the way Laura Ingalls Wilder's is, despite the obvious similarities, and she seems too willing to gloss over the reality of how difficult homesteading usually was. This book lacked interest for me, but it wasn't entirely bad.

Five stars. I read it for the first in the seventh grade. Then again a few years after that, etc. One of the very few books I've ever reread and rarer still that I reread more than twice.

A story of the origin of so many American small towns, made by the amazing strength of our ancestors, men and women and children, who built their livelihoods on the great grasslands with their bare muscle and love. A boy grows and remembers all that he loves and how he came to be.
