I thought this book would be exciting because it is about the adventures of a shipwrecked family trying to survive on an island. I made it under halfway and had to give up. It is extremely boring - a chore to read. The boys immediately kill every animal they find. The family has a buffet of food. The dad knows how to do everything, and can identify every exotic organism they encounter. His wife apparently has no name, but is only referred to as "the mother" or "the wife".

Of course having seen Disney's movie version, I was surprised (and disappointed) at some of the major differences, such as the 'tree house'. I also got a little tired of how many diverse and useful items they conveniently found. (What was that crystal they found? They description suggested diamonds, but he didn't pursue it.) It actually got a little boring, though I appreciated the thanks they gave to God for all their blessings. The movie did the same without the unrealistic bounty, but a strong mother.

I read this in high school many years ag. I think that the edition I read then was "edited". I really enjoyed this version and feel it is more like the original. The Christian references remind me of the founding fathers and what made this a Great country. It also shows that people can overcome great adversity with the right mind set, unlike what you see today.
