About this ebook

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Oprah's Book Club Selection

The “extraordinary . . . monumental masterpiece” (Booklist) that changed the course of Ken Follett’s already phenomenal career—and begins where its prequel, The Evening and the Morning, ended.

“Follett risks all and comes out a clear winner,” extolled Publishers Weekly on the release of The Pillars of the Earth. A departure for the bestselling thriller writer, the historical epic stunned readers and critics alike with its ambitious scope and gripping humanity. Today, it stands as a testament to Follett’s unassailable command of the written word and to his universal appeal.

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known . . . of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect—a man divided in his soul . . . of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame . . . and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state and brother against brother.

A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follett’s historical masterpiece.

This is an excellent well - written book. If you're a Ken Follett fan, you will be blown away by this book. If not a fan you will still love it. You sympathize and cheer with the characters. Only thing that I didn't care for was the technical talk concerning architecture. But true to form Ken always makes the characters jump off the page and be believable. Overall, a must-read.

Read several times. Of thousands of books I've read it makes one of my Top Ten list along with How To Make An Atomic Bomb, Shougun, Dune, The Desert Fox, Tortilla Flats, Helter Skelter, The Power of One, For The Sake of All Living Things, and The Confederacy of Dunces.

This is an amazing fiction book based on real mankind history which teaches us a lot about the power of perseverance and faith in our innermost beliefs whilst teaching us about how churches evolved in Europe, and how the Church was influent in middle age politics. Not a five stars only because Ken Follet is way too crazy about describing churches architecture.
