About this ebook

Caustic and hilarious, Candide has ranked as one of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. It concerns the adventures of the youthful Candide, disciple of Dr. Pangloss, who was himself a disciple of Leibniz.
In the course of his travels and adventures in Europe and South America, Candide saw and suffered such misfortune that it was difficult for him to believe this was "the best of all possible worlds" as Dr. Pangloss had assured him. Indeed, it seemed to be quite the opposite. In brilliantly skewering such naïveté, Voltaire mercilessly exposes and satirizes romance, science, philosophy, religion, and government — the ideas and forces that permeate and control the lives of men.
After many trials and travails, Candide is reunited with Cunegonde, his sweetheart. He then buys a little farm in Turkey where he and Cunegonde, Dr. Pangloss and others all retire. In the end, Candide decides that the best thing in the world is to cultivate one's own garden. A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

Many people read this book without knowing any background info of the time those book was written and the philosophy of the time Candide was set in so they see this book as plain vulgar and weird because they don't understand where the satire is and how it plays a role on the story. So i suggest that you do a little research before reading this.

Hilarious and entertaining. It's amazing how much of the jokes and jibes you can understand in this outdated language... and a lesson to be learned... an old fashioned, pessimistic, Forrest Gump-esque adventure.

There is little need to sing the praises of Candide. It is a funny biting, satire of enlightenment thinking. However this particular eBook is riddled with typos. It appears to be an unchecked machine OCR of a printed book. It is full of periods where commas should be and comas at the end of sentences. There are many places that have the number 1 where the letter I should be. Sometimes there are just a series of special characters that make one wonder what was really meant. The problems would have been found in a grammar check with a decade old version of MS Word, so all I conclude is that the publisher did not check the work. At least I hope so, it would be worse if someone personally approved such sloppy work. The total effect is to break the magic of reading such a good work. Buy another translation to enjoy this wonderful book.
