About this ebook

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics.

Considered one of the all-time great American works of fiction, Fitzgerald’s glorious yet ultimately tragic social satire on the Jazz Age encapsulates the exuberance, energy and decadence of an era.

After the war, the mysterious Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire pursues wealth, riches and the lady he lost to another man with stoic determination. He buys a mansion across from her house and throws lavish parties to try and entice her. When Gatsby finally does reunite with Daisy Buchanan, tragic events are set in motion.

Told through the eyes of his detached and omnipresent neighbour and friend, Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald’s succinct and powerful prose hints at the destruction and tragedy that awaits.

There's a reason this only caught on 4p years afteb it was released. Yes, Fitzgerald's style if writing is poetic, but this is just a mask for a paper thin plot. The characters are deliberately unlikable, but still, as I've just said, unlikable. There seems to be no appeal in this arrogant story about pretension and a stereotype of love.

There is a lot of hype about this book at the moment with a new film about to be released, so I read it thinking it one of those that 'everyone should read'. I'm left rather cold by that disjointed story line about one dimensional characters and left wondering how the tale could fill an entire film. Wishing now that I hadn't bothered.

A compelling read about the jazz age (collins classic edition includes a section at the end of the book about author and this era ;)) A brilliant insight into this era and 'the american dream'. I particularly enjoyed the references he made about Doc T J Eckleburg eyes. Characters were excellent. I will definitely be reading some more of F. Scott Fitzgerald's books :)
