About this ebook

From NYT bestselling author Brent Weeks comes the first novel in his breakout fantasy trilogy in which a young boy trains under the city's most legendary and feared assassin, Durzo Blint.

For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art -- and he is the city's most accomplished artist.

For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly -- and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.

But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics -- and cultivate a flair for death.

This book was trash. The writing not only was cliche-driven drabble, but it needed an editor. I've read better fiction from my friend's 7-year-old son. The plot is semi-decent, but haven't we read this already in Game of Thrones, Lord of The Rings, etc? The writer wrote on cocktail napkins, and that's where this should have remained.

I loved this book. It kept me reading and once finished, I was extremely glad I'd picked up the whole trilogy in one purchase. For some people, it picks up slowly- but Weeks is building up a solid foundation for a story. The setting, the characters, their lives, etc, are all created beautifully and I was attached to Azoth from the the beginning. While sometimes I had to re-read a few things to reorient myself, Weeks still does a fantastic pulling the reader through the plot, ending on a crazy cliffhanger that leaves you grasping for more. I have finished this book and the second (Shadow's Edge) and am currently working on the last book, Beyond the Shadows.

I was standing there in a store staring at a bunch of books when a marine on leave walked up behind me. We started talking and I told him I was needing a book while I was at MEPS the following week and he immediately snatched this book off the shelf and handed it to me. The book was finished over the course of two days while I was at MEPS and before even heading home, I stopped by the store and grabbed the last 2 books. This was almost 5 years ago and here I am, STILL reading and rereading these amazing adventures.
