About this ebook

A big novel about a small town...

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

This book was amazing, pure and simple. There a were a a lot of characters to learn and all with their own individual idiosyncrasies and motives. But by far one if the best books I have read this year, right behind Ken Follet's Winter Of The World. It takes a few chapters to really get into it, but once you do; I for one, could not put it down. Love Krystal....such a true character.

I started reading the 'free sample' and lost interest after ten pages or so. I couldn't find anything fresh or new--just depressingly egotistical, predictable boring small-town people. Maybe the plot and characters get going later but there was no hint of that in the first ten pages.

I was expecting more from Ms. Rowling, but this book is not that exciting new work we were expecting and wished for. The premise of the story was mildly interesting but the characters and interactions were anything but. I would have much rather read a fantasy epic involving Pagford and Yarvil instead of some town stuck in its ways. A Casual Vacancy feels more like Ms. Rowling had a bone to pick with a former residence than anything else. I will buy from Ms. Rowling in the future but this is a pure miss.
