About this ebook

NOW THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES—THE MASTERPIECE THAT BECAME A CULTURAL PHENOMENON

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

Very much like the new HBO series. It seemed as if I was reliving every scene. Good book, very well written, keeps you wanting more as it skips to develop each character. Wanted to skip ahead for specific characters but will power kept me on track and because of the compelling writing , I experienced this at every new chapter. After awhile , each new chapter gave a welcome relief of familiarity and comfort knowing the constantly developing characters will reemerge with even more detail. This book is the first in the series as we are thrown back into a medival world with Kings, Knights and maybe a hint of dragons and magic. A Tale of two of kingdoms with a 3rd and 4th kingdom intertwined. Mundane kingdom life, heightened political machinations, assassinations, sex, violence , and a little left over magic rounds out this book. I give this book 5 stars and I read it on my samsung facinate. I highly reccommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy and/or are fans of the hbo series .

You have No idea What your getting into with this series. This series is a joy to read and it all begins here. Martin sets up a very different fantasy novel. The characters you meet in this book are vivid and real. They have real motivation and real flaws, but they also have a great responsibility. This book is engrossing. This book is shocking, and it is amazingly written. Any person interested in writing should read this series. You will learn so much from this man.

A Game of Thrones starts out slowly, and I got frustrated at least once when I couldn't keep all the heraldry straight, but once the ball got rolling and I began to associate families with their lords, this book really took off! This story is told from the viewpoint of a handful of characters, most belonging to the Stark family with a few notable exceptions. Each chapter is dedicated to one of these narrators and provides a terrific window into their motivations and feelings. Notably, Martin has created characters in each camp that you love and hate, leading to a bit of moral ambiguity when it comes to deciding what side you're on. Surely most will rally behind the Starks, after all, they hold the majority of the narration, but instead of wanting all-out victory, you start hoping for a compromise that will somehow eliminate those you deem evil, but save those you've come to support, no matter who's side they're on. These characters not only have compelling stories and strong personalities (and very different personalities they are, as well as well written), but they're set up against one of the most, if not THE most, detailed and well fleshed-out backdrops I've seen since Middle Earth. Five stars, looking forward to the next one.
