Fils de parents militants, Richard Mason est né en Afrique du Sud en 1978, de parents militants qui se sont installés en Angleterre quand il avait dix ans. Poursuivant son éducation en Grande-Bretagne, il a écrit son premier roman, Le Bal des imposteurs (Lattès, 2003), avant d'entrer à Oxford. Dans les années suivantes, il a achevé ses études et créé dans son pays natal une institution caritative à la mémoire de sa sœur Kay. Cette dernière, la Kay Mason Foundation, offre des bourses à des enfants défavorisés, grâce auxquelles ils peuvent accéder à certaines des meilleures écoles d'Afrique du Sud.
