I just finished my 11th or 12th read (I think I've lost track) and although not from the famous Jack Ryan series, I routinely call this book my favorite Clancy work. The multiple locations, excellent character development, and descriptive details, all enhance the sheer plausibility of events for the time period and contribute to its mastery. Of all Clancy's books, this is the one I most wished had been made into an epic movie on the scale of "The Day After"(1983). A must read, or read again. RIP Mr. Clancy.

Some people might be turned off by the detail and the somewhat slow start. But once the pieces are set look out its world war 3 in Europe at sea air and land.

Bought it 20 years ago and read it about once a year. My copie is getting a bit worn so going for a digital version. It's definatly in my top 5. A credible and technologically accurate World War 3 scenario, Clancy at his best.

About the author

A little more than thirty years ago Tom Clancy was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore’s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.
