About this ebook

Introduction by China Miéville

Long acknowledged as a master of nightmarish visions, H. P. Lovecraft established the genuineness and dignity of his own pioneering fiction in 1931 with his quintessential work of supernatural horror, At the Mountains of Madness. The deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition’s uncanny discoveries–and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization–is a milestone of macabre literature.

This exclusive new edition, presents Lovecraft’s masterpiece in fully restored form, and includes his acclaimed scholarly essay “Supernatural Horror in Literature.” This is essential reading for every devotee of classic terror.

This is one of H.P. Lovecraft's most surprising and innovative works, as it doesn't feel like a traditional "weird tale". Elements of arctic adventure and cosmic horror are weaved together seamlessly, giving the story a sense of prolonged dread that increases as the main character continues to explore this tale's electrifying setting. The discoveries made by the protagonist are ancient, appalling, and highly original, but definitely typical of a Lovecraft novel. The pacing is relatively slow, but not in a way that hinders the plot, as many of his writings tend to build slowly and conclude with a disturbing finale. This story is no exception. "At the Mountains of Madness" is simply Lovecraft at his best.

This, in my humble opinion is, one of his finest works. If you're a huge fan of science fiction stories, especially like Philip K. Dick and John W. Campbell Jr.; and others maybe just looking for something perhaps from a uniquely written perspective which also makes for the strange and unusual reader's interaction with the storyline and experience.

As always I've been a fan of his work although cloudy and horrific at times, I suggest that you read this treatise on cosmic horror.
