If you are starting with the piece of gold called linux kernel, first read love's book then this one. At first, it is a little hard but it worth it. Before attacking these books, I recommend C programming knowledge (k&R), assembly and of course operating systems background. Good reading

Informative text that deals primarily with Linux kernel as implemented on that most familiar machine architecture, 80x86. Other architectures are mentioned, but only where notable differences exist vis-a-vis the x86 architecture. Large portions of the book are devoted to memory management at all levels. The text also explains the management and intercommunication of processes. A formidable read for the uninitiated, but a wealth of knowledge for those willing to learn.
