About this ebook

Golding’s iconic 1954 novel, now with a new foreword by Lois Lowry, remains one of the greatest books ever written for young adults and an unforgettable classic for readers of any age.

This edition includes a new Suggestions for Further Reading by Jennifer Buehler.

At the dawn of the next world war, a plane crashes on an uncharted island, stranding a group of schoolboys. At first, with no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate. This far from civilization they can do anything they want. Anything. But as order collapses, as strange howls echo in the night, as terror begins its reign, the hope of adventure seems as far removed from reality as the hope of being rescued.

I would have to say it is one of the best novels of that era. I enjoyed it as a required English class selection, but did not truly understand the deep sociological themes the author was writing about as a kid, but I certainly do now and it is profoundly darker as a result. Not a book for people who are used to the author coddling them, or the unobservant, but a true iconic classic for those who appreciate novels with deeper meanings than simply being entertained. Another great book similar to this one is Watership Down, and that one I highly recommend as well.

this is too gruesome and depressing for me. it will stay in your memory and teach you a lesson, but it's not how I want to spend my precious free time

emotions follow an exponential arc. the beginning was tough for me to latch on to, but I was almost panting by the end of the book. unsure I could read it again, but glad to have had at least once. would definitely recommend, to a bibliophile or not
