If you enjoyed the film, then you will love the book. This gives a much fuller picture of Solomon Northups life and what not just him but many more slaves had to endure. It took me a little time to get used to the flow of the language, but once I did it gripped me. I really wish I could have found out what happened to him, and the man who made his freedom possible Bass.

Although the story relays the experience of Solomon as a man captured and sold in to slavery, the book, to me, read like a school text book not a biography of his life experiences. He spent a lot of time going into great detail describing establishments where he was made to work, but spent little time describing his interactions with his fellow man who were held as slaves and how they overcame the frustrations of being held in bandage.

A compelling read! Well written, absorbing and heart-wrenching. And, as is always true of real life stories, only partial justice was to be had for brave Solomon.
