Simple, to track free samples given away. If lots of people download, but not many buy the actual book, then maybe it just had a great cover, or title, or ppl liked the authors other works. On the other hand, if lots of ppl buy the book after previewing, it must've been a gripping preview or trailer. If whole books are given away, those owning copyright and trademark rights get to claim it on taxes also. Information from samples downloaded compared to books bought can also be used by publishers to determine what type of manuscripts to buy from authors shaping the cycle of types of 'books sold, determine books written' books bought by ppl --> types of books bought by companies --> types of books authors write in order to sell --> types of books bought by publishers --> types of books published --> types of books bought by ppl --> etc. Simplified but you can see the point.

An interesting collection of short stories, great for when you can only steal a few minutes a day for reading. Introduced me to a few authors, too.
