I have read this book in German in order to better learn the language, so my opinion is biased. I found this to be an OK sci-fi book, but it does not deserve the hype it gets. Lots of the references to the games and sings sometimes feel forced, maybe because I am reading at a snail's pace so reach extra paragraph that just tried to add more depth to the world quite often looks like a show-off moment from the author that keeps me away from the action. For gamers (but more geared towards board games) I'd actually recommend Player of Games by Iain M Banks. A much better written book. The good thing is that I have discovered Rush (the rock band) and their songs are quite nice to listen to when working.

A very plausible future where the appeal of virtual reality is greater than actual reality in the oppressive and depressing dystopia. This book gripped me from start to finish. So many wholly satisfying moments - especially for an 80's baby like myself!
