It's a mediocre cash in on a series of rather great games. It sells because it says halo on the front of it. If it's getting kids reading something I suppose it's worth the extra star. And if you're reading this review and vehemently disagreeing with it and spitting bile try reading something by Iain M Bank from his culture series or something by Brian Aldiss, Frank Herbert or Isaac Asimov. Game franchises simply struggle to fit into other formats.

The story line is great. I've enjoyed all of the Reach lore and everything surrounding it. This book fills in a lot of gaps when it comes to the creation of the Spartan-IIs and the strategic involvement of Reach. It makes the game Halo:Reach even more interesting. The only thing I didn't like was that some of Eric Nylund's writing can get a little dry. Other than that, it's great.

Excellent book. Enjoyed the thorough background and origin story of Spartan-117. Not only did the pages of this novel offer enlightenment, but offered an interesting peek into the minds of the USNC Military machine as well other Spartans that served with John. Cortana makes a welcome debut as well. Spartan-117 has always been a fan favorite since the Halo game was released. This novel provides a "face" to the Master Chief and assists the fans of the game to enter the environment just as easily as the game itself.
