About this ebook

Bestselling, award-winning futurist David Brin returns to globe-spanning, high concept SF with Existence.

Gerald Livingston is an orbital garbage collector. For a hundred years, people have been abandoning things in space, and someone has to clean it up. But there's something spinning a little bit higher than he expects, something that isn't on the decades' old orbital maps. An hour after he grabs it and brings it in, rumors fill Earth's infomesh about an "alien artifact."

Thrown into the maelstrom of worldwide shared experience, the Artifact is a game-changer. A message in a bottle; an alien capsule that wants to communicate. The world reacts as humans always do: with fear and hope and selfishness and love and violence. And insatiable curiosity.

Because this book has been stitched together from disparate earlier works, including several of Brin's essays, you can see glimmers of what Brin used to be as a storyteller, before he became the Advocate of Transparency. The characters are mostly interchangeable talking heads, who will all rationally and dispassionately solve whatever their chapter crisis is. None have emotional resonance, all serve the plot first rather than their own motives. The section expanding on "Lungfish" is the best. And oldest.

Garbage collector in space? It's probably closer to reality then fantasy, if we think of all the the millions of what ever's ...we have launched into space. I loved it! I stayed excited to see where the author would go. Leaning toward "sure I can see that happening in the future" or just entertaining the reader with a wacky read. It looks Like middle class garbage collectors just might have a far out future.

Nice read, but Brin seems to think his audience doesn't remember. Great plot, lots of stuff going on, but he repeats himself.
