The Hundred-Foot Journey

This movie trods a well-worn path and adds nothing new. The struggling immigrants taking on the establishment in their adopted country, and succeeding against all odds, etc. Helen Mirren and Om Puri bring much to elevate the movie. It would have been far more interesting, however, if the story had been about the daughter's struggle to become a chef. I would have traveled a hundred miles for that story!

The characters are compelling and well-written, responding to their circumstances in a way you can see them as real people doing, like other Lasse Halston movies. This movie could well paired with "Chocolat" and/or "Ratatouille," even though the latter is a cartoon. Even without the love stories, the movie is gorgeously romantic in its portrayal of the emotionally evocative aspects of culinary art.

I love me a good culture clash/foodie film. And this one satisfied. I know I knocked the movie Chef, and for good reason. this is a much smarter, richer experience even though I admit it does stay true to the formula of many of these movies. But it pulls it off with dignity and some really fantastic acting. La Mirren gracefully allows newer actors to shine and the whole film comes together nicely. I ordered Indian food halfway through this movie. I'm warning you: have that delivery menu handy!
