About this movie

Inspired by the best-selling graphic novel by Darwyn Cooke and produced by the multiple Emmy® award winning animation legend, Bruce Timm, The New Frontier is the epic tale of the founding of the Justice League. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are all here of course, and so are Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Flash - whose incredible origins will be told for the very first time. Strangers at first, these very different heroes must overcome fear and suspicion to forge an alliance against a monster so formidable, even the mighty Superman can not stop it. If they fail, our entire planet will be "cleansed" of humanity. MPAA Rating: NOTRATED (c) 2008 A Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. This movie didn't have the time or budget to do the source material justice. It starts strong with the painterly, stylized book illustration sequence, but then almost immediately goes off the rails by rushing through scene after scene with jarring freneticism. The pacing on this is absurd. It's so frantic and rushed that I stopped watching the movie for entertainment and began clocking each scene for time. The longest scene is about 2 minutes and 12 seconds. Some are under 20. They average around 40 seconds. 40 second disjointed jump cuts of a fight scene, explosion, rousing speech out of nowhere, character origin stories, suicide missions, and nonexistent character development. There is no space in this movie. There is no room for jokes, or distinctive dialogue, space for dramatic relief. Just one expository flash to the next.

This has the misfortune of being compared to some of the better batman and super man movies. If you don't want a huge investment in the dc universe, watch this. But the characters are not especially deep and it feels like all the main characters are repeated cameos. It must be this way so people who don't know them already can watch, and its still really good, but not as good as a few other featuring the same characters.

Compared to some of Dc's later animated movies this one is just ok. Its not as thrilling and there's some plot holes that go unresolved even after the movie ends. For example, the main villain. His/her's only backstory is a small intro in the beginning stating how it grew from the beginning of time to be a giant flying island full of dinosaurs. Seriously, thats it so dont scream spoiler at me. One thing good from this is the Golden Age take on comics. Usually its the Modern Age that captures most audiences these days but if you're a real OG and read the comics from the beginning, you're gonna love this. The movie also captures the challenges America faced in those days like discrimination, McCarthyism, and Cold War paranoia. The price is justified so give it a go.
