About this movie

The future. America is an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC lies Mega City One a vast, violent metropolis of over 400 million citizens living in perpetual fear. The only ones attempting to impose order in the urban chaos are The Judges. Law enforcers, juries, judges and executioners rolled into one. The epitome of these Judges is Dredd. The Chief Judge gives Dredd a mission. To road test a rookie Judge, the powerful psychic Cassandra Anderson. It is to be a training day. The Judges head for a seemingly routine homicide in the notorious Peach Trees mega-block - a 200-storey vertical slum run by the pitiless Ma-Ma clan. When the Judges attempt to arrest one of Ma-Ma's chief henchmen, Ma-Ma shuts down the entire building and orders her clan to hunt the judges down. Our two judges are now caught in a vicious and relentless fight for survival. Rena Films (PTY) Ltd. and Peach Tree Films Ltd.

I wasn't a big fan of Judge Dredd prior to this film. All i'd heard about this was that it was 'The Raid', again, but with Karl Urban and the trailers made it look like a kind-of sequel to District 9 with its dusty urban setting. It didn't sound too inspiring. But wow, I finished this and felt exhilarated (if not a bit dirty)! This is how you can create a great (albeit schlocky) film from the most basic story building blocks. Urban and Thirlby together are a great team and Headey as Ma Ma as surprisingly multilayered as a character. The visuals are nothing to be sneered at either, the battered muckiness of the setting, the characters, the weapons etc all look convincing. The slo-mo sequences are fantastically over saturated, but my final note goes to the soundtrack which is absolutely fantastic. Well worth a watch.

Consider it a tale from Dredd's many, many adventures. Script and direction brings a gritty and bleak realism to the setting but if you're a die hard fan looking for narrative on Dredd and Mega City One then look else where.

A great action film that, whilst a bit silly, is a sterling example of what can be done with a comic book adaptation when you focus on a concise story and have some fun
