Much slower than modern movies, you get more time to absorb the emotions of the characters, which is one of the great strengths of this movie. Then there's the level of detail and that there's real people rather than CGI. My only problem with it was that it was a little hard to follow what was going on. It didn't go into the politics and stakes that were involved in any depth, possibly because at the time the movie was made most people could still recall a lot of the news coverage and thus not need an explanation. For modern audiences however who do not know much of the history it leaves you in some question as to what's going on. Perhaps one should read up a little bit before watching it.

It may be slower than modern films but it makes up for it in inspiration and sheer awe.
