About this movie

Who is Vivian Maier? Now considered one of the 20th century's greatest street photographers, Vivian Maier was a mysterious nanny who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that went unseen during her lifetime. Since buying her work by chance at auction, amateur historian John Maloof has crusaded to put this prolific photographer in the history books. Maier's strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never-before-seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her.

I really loved this movie. The fact that this guy found all of these rolls of film/ negatives that were taken by the mysterious woman is amazing. John really built this story from the ground up. It really inspires me to critique my work as a young teenage photographer. Another thing I love about the movie was how john solved her mystery in a way. By tracking her locations and trying to get inside her head, It was amazing. I should try to attend more flee markets. Maybe I can find my mystery to solve & become a secret spy.

I am fascinated by her and her gift,by the people who knew something of her ,and by John's presentation of her and her work. Yet, I don't feel she will ever be fully understood. This is part of the beauty of her spirit which she has left behind. I wish John M. could have found her before she died. He may have been the only person she would have fully revealed her true self to. It feels as though she understood something, something that eludes the rest of us and it haunts me. I watch this film over and over, hoping to find an answer, knowing she has taken the secret of her life with her. I am sorry she is gone.

The work and story of Vivian was truly truly amazing. The interviews of people who interacted with her made a huge impact in piecing together her story. I was hoping to see less of him throughout the documentary. However, the narrator (the person who discovered the photos) could and should have been left out of all interviews. It seems that he just wants to make money off of her work instead of freely sharing it with the world.
