About this movie

Set in Japan during the 1870s, THE LAST SAMURAI tells the story of Capt. Nathan Algren (TOM CRUISE), a respected American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient Imperial Samurai warriors in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly government policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his own sense of honor to guide him. So subtley different from its fellow "foreigner in a strange land" movies. and it thankfully has a message of balance rather than going full fledged traditionalist or progressionist.

Enjoyable film but completely unrelated to the historical person of the titular character. Shame because the story of the actual "Last Samurai" is an epic tale in its own right.

I am one of those people who saw the movie years ago, and continue to watch it over and over again when I see the previews. Tom Cruise is an excellent actor. You might not like him as a person or as a Scientologist, or even as a liberal Hollywood elite. As an actor? He throws everything he has into every movie he makes. This was no exception. This role was made for HIM, and he nailed it! His supporting cast was awesome as well. Must see.
