Trek's crowd-pleasing '80s time-travel tale has its share of memorable, even iconic scenes; it's a warm, human respite from space intrigue, fine characterization keeping the proceedings from getting dull. The 23rd century heroes must acquire two 20th century whales that can communicate with an alien intelligence that's about to wreak havoc on the Federation. Incredible score plays majestically in one poignant or funny scene after another. A Star Trek story for everyone.

Excellent, unique plot, ongoing suspense, surprise turns, yet adventurous, more than, origal series. All characters'personlities show strengths hidden over their history behind formal federation prototocols; their intense closeness and trust; deep affection (not romance), fear, conerns and worries for each other, faith in each other, choice of loyalty to each other more than the federation, willing to risk entire careers and lives for each other. Nimory (Spock) cowrote story and script, bringng back characters' integrity, values, added life's experiences, consistent with history to tv vshows and previous movies. Nimoy's direction brought back true flavor! Added great humor via valid and most probable time travel snags a traveler will encounter on a personal level from culture clash, naivity, misconceptions, not understanding rules or their own awkwardness. We watchit many times and don't tire due to every sentence revealing more, important to characters and plot. It's mesmerizing!

I've heard a lot of bad stuff said about this movie. Going in, as a new star trek fan trying to make my way through the pantheon of entertainment informed, but not spoiled; i can tell you it was all wrong. This is basically everything the first movie wanted to be. It was a big scale star trek TOS episode, but it was funny as hell, still had a lot of tension, and fit seamlessly into the plot of the last two. It made sense, and yes, even the whales made complete sense. Watch this film, no matter what.
