About this movie

This wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family—handsome businessman Tomas, his willowy wife Ebba and their two blond children— on a skiing holiday in the French Alps. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but during a lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche suddenly bears down on the happy diners. With people fleeing in all directions and his wife and children in a state of panic, Tomas makes a decision that will shake his marriage to its core and leave him struggling to reclaim his role as family patriarch.

Pretty funny and beautifully shot... After watching this I now must spend a week or three at a Swiss or French ski resort at the height of the season. Colorado is nice (I'm talking to you Steamboat, Aspen and Vail) but only Europe will scratch this newfound itch...

Deep, meaningful, and beautifully shot, I enjoyed this movie a lot. There's some comic relief but if you aren't used to subtlety you may have to look hard for the humor.

A handsome man who probably would have alternatives for sexual adventure chooses instead to remain loyal to his family, reveal his vulnerability, and find the root of his masculinity in his ability to discover, support and protect his loved ones. His denunciation of materialism and promiscuous adventure frees him from the empty loneliness of triumphal toxic masculinity. This is an elegant, moving document, a wonderful film.
