James May goes off-road to tell the story of how the 4x4 conquered the world. From the wartime jeep to the global struggle between Land Rover and Land Cruiser, the white-knuckle world of rallying and boy racers, plus James conquers Mount Fuji and races through the sun-scorched Mojave Desert to decide which is the ultimate people's 4x4.
3 Episode 3
2/6/16
James explores the wilder shores of motoring to discover what happened to the cars of the future that we were promised. From improbable steam cars and ludicrous jet turbines he reveals how the petrol engine and the power it gave us came to dominate the 20th century. He'll take to the waves in an amphibious car, risk his life at the wheel of a notorious electric scooter and take a hair raising trip in the fastest driverless car on earth.

About this show

The Model T, the 2CV, The Fiat Cinquecento - history says these are the iconic People's Cars, but James May begs to differ, and in this three-part documentary series, he tells the story of the cars he believes are the true Cars of the People. As always, his choices will surprise and provoke car lovers everywhere. His journey will take him across mainland Europe to Russia and Japan, and in typical Top Gear style, there'll be road tests, capers and challenges.

I think May is a pompous idiot. He values his own interest in Eastern European foibles, criticizes hippies as he rides around in tie dyed shirts and Beatle length hair. If he could make fun of himself as much as everyone else, I might respect him. As is, he's mostly a blowhard who begrudges U.S. innovation in favor of Germany and Japan. The show is not about cars. It's about James May.

I find James May interesting. Now, before you ignore this review based on my introduction, let me say that this series by Mr. May hits all of his high notes as a presenter: intelligent, informative, interesting, and taking a Colonial Britain approach to the presentation.
